37-reed Sheng(37簧圆笙)

37 reeds Sheng

The 37-reed Soprano Sheng is fully chromatic and it has a range of 3 octaves (G3 – G6). It is designed by Professor Mou Shan Ping and Professor Weng Zhen Fa in the 1980s. This Sheng is awarded the “Scientific and Technological Achievements” 3rd prize by the Ministry of Culture (China).

The 37-reed Soprano Sheng is a versatile instrument which is capable of playing different genres of music and polyphonic works. It is considered one of the most sophisticated Shengs in terms of design.

Although Chris Lim is capable of playing different types of Shengs, the 37-reed Soprano Sheng is his preferred instrument.

The video (audio only) below features a difficult Sheng solo played by Professor Xu Chao Ming (徐超铭教授) using the 37-reed Sheng.
