37 reeds Sheng

The 37-reed Soprano Sheng is fully chromatic and it has a range of 3 octaves (g – g3). It is designed by Professor Mou Shan Ping and Mr Weng Zhen Fa in the 1980s. This Sheng is awarded the “Scientific and Technological Achievements” 3rd prize by the Ministry of Culture (China).

The 37-reed Soprano Sheng is a versatile instrument which is capable of playing different genres of music and polyphonic works. It is considered one of the most sophisticated Shengs in terms of design.

Although Chris Lim is capable of playing different types of Shengs, the 37-reed Soprano Sheng is his preferred instrument.

The video below features the Sheng player using the 37-reed Sheng in a fusion ensemble.
